Source: National Curriculum in England, English Appendix 1: Spelling (DfE)

Schools often call these the Year 5 and 6 common exception words. The National Curriculum calls them the statutory word list for Years 5 and 6, and children are expected to learn to spell all 100 by the end of Year 6.

What it covers

  • All 100 words from the Years 5–6 statutory word list
  • A printable word list
  • A printable look–say–cover–write–check sheet

Who it's for

Children in Years 5 and 6 (ages 9–11).

How to use it

  • Learn 10 words a week rather than all of them at once.
  • Use look–say–cover–write–check: look at the word, say it, cover it, write it from memory, then check.
  • Use each word in a sentence of your own, spoken first and then written.
