Year 7 Writing to Persuade – Which and Why?

Year 7EnglishWorksheet1 pages

A one-page activity that teaches persuasive writing by comparison. Students look at five groups of three statements, tick the most persuasive one and write a reason – a great way to understand the techniques before using them in their own writing.

What it covers

  • Modal verbs and certainty ('must' vs 'should' vs 'I think')
  • Statistics and expert/customer quotes as evidence
  • Rhetorical questions and direct address
  • Emotive language
  • Urgency and imperatives

Who it's for

Year 7 students (age 11–12); also useful for Years 6 and 8 and for GCSE persuasive writing basics.

How to use it

Discuss the answers aloud – there's no single right answer, it's the reasoning that matters.
