A Year 6 reading assessment based on two extracts from J. Meade Falkner's Moonfleet, an 18th-century smuggling adventure set on the south coast of England. The reading booklet holds the extracts; the answer booklet holds 12 questions (18 marks) for pupils to answer in writing.

What it covers

  • Retrieval and vocabulary (e.g. finding a word for a shallow stretch of water)
  • Inference about characters and setting
  • Explaining figurative language ('My heart was in my mouth…')
  • Using evidence from more than one paragraph
  • Giving and justifying an opinion with evidence

Who it's for

Year 6 children (age 10–11) preparing for the KS2 SATs reading paper, and able Year 5 readers.

How to use it

Allow around 30–40 minutes. No mark scheme is included – a Harringtons tutor can mark it with your child.
