Who are your Teachers?
All our teachers have up-to-date DBS checks and are British-trained and fully-qualified, with many years’ experience teaching in local schools. Some have training in Dyslexia and other Special Needs. We have teachers who specialise in the 11+. The right teacher will be chosen for your child’s specific needs. Our specialist focus is on primary and secondary literacy and numeracy. We also employ highly skilled TAs who have extensive experience in intervention and group work.
Will you come to my home?
We believe that Centre-based tuition is preferable to home-based and for this reason all tuition takes place in our Centre in Burnley, where we have our own huge range of unique resources and equipment available to ensure the best possible teaching. Each session is fast paced and incorporates 5 well pitched activities which thoroughly engage your child and fast track the learning process. You are assured of your child’s safety at all times, and they also benefit from the social aspect of the session environment, through meeting other children who are also having tuition and active engagement in speaking and listening. You are able to wait in the waiting area of the Centre, served with coffee/tea, biscuits and materials about our learning centre.
What ages do you teach?
We take children from age 5 to young adult. Any child may attend, providing they are able to take care of their basic physical needs and have adequate communication skills.
What subjects do you teach?
We teach English and Maths, and 11+ preparation. For the youngest, we have an early reading phonics programme and an early maths programme which are delivered by an early years practitioner. Both these are tailored packages used exclusively in our Centre. For the age groups in KS1, KS2, KS3 we teach Reading, Writing, Spelling, Comprehension, Maths and Mental Maths. Again, our traditional teaching methods and means of working differentiate us from other tuition/learning centres. Our learning environment is just like a school classroom and the children love it! For the older children working towards exams we teach English and Maths to GCSE. We also tutor for the 11+, including maths, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Please call us for further information about this specialist area and also for a tour of our centre. We also teach Science and ICT if required for personal evaluation.
Do you teach home schooled children?
We have helped many home-schooled children build their confidence and reach their academic potential. Our tuition method is ideal for children who are studying at home, as it provides a learning environment with other children, which may be missing at home. We link with the school curriculum, so if you enrol your home-schooled child with us for Maths and English you can be assured they will cover the essential material required for the National Curriculum in an effective and sensitive way. We can also help with preparation for the GCSE exams in English and Maths.
How long are sessions?
Each session in the Centre is 100 minutes long, and is made up of a variety of activities. Upon entering our centre children are greeted with a glass of juice and biscuits. During the course of the session your child will be given both traditional and computer-based work to do.This session will incorporate speaking and listening, maths activity, literacy task, reading time and ICT cross curricular activity. Our bespoke, tailored teaching strategies enable us to do this. Please call our centre for further information on how we achieve this or book an appointment for a discussion.
Is work marked and do children receive homework?
Unlike other centres each piece of work is thoroughly marked using the leading marking strategy currently used in good and outstanding schools. Children are given realistic targets. Which they must demonstrate in their next piece of work. Children are encouraged to reply to the marking and take ownership. Again, during parent meetings you can see your child’s work books. Children love having their work marked and receiving positive comments and certificates. This is a key difference between Harringtons Learning Centres and other centres.
Is it one-to-one tuition?
Yes, we provide one-to-one tuition within a small group setting. Task is explained and each child is given the opportunity to discuss. Your child will always be given full attention by their teacher, and will be able to ask questions as much as they want. They will follow their own customised programme of study, with the teacher at hand, but with the encouragement of knowing that other children are working hard too. Children have their own personal targets to move them on and enable them to make accelerated progress. The small group will range from 3-6. The atmosphere in the Centre is calm and focussed, and the children have shown us over the years that they learn better in very small groups than when taught one-to-one. A chunk of our lessons are based on independent learning as we feel that enables children to go back to school with an open minded approach to learning.
Do you have programmes for dyslexia and ADHD?
Yes. Built in to our teaching philosophy are many strategies which are highly effective for children who have mild ADHD or dyslexia. We also have a special teaching resource which has been written for children with literacy problems such as dyslexia, which works very well. Harringtons Learning Centre is an inclusive learning centre and is open to all children.
What about Gifted Children?
Gifted children are often frustrated at school. We can offer them a programme of extension work which will lessen their feeling of being stifled. Teachers in schools often struggle to extend a gifted child, and for many such children a weekly session at our Centre can be a welcome opportunity to tackle more interesting work. Please call us to discuss your specific needs.
When are you open?
We are open all year round for weekday evening sessions and weekend sessions. Our office is manned from 9.00am till 5.00pm so feel free to call during these times. We have one session weekdays and this runs from 4:30pm till 6.00pm Monday to Friday. We are also available for bespoke times and sessions depending on your individual requirements.
What if I have to miss a session?
If you need to rearrange a session you can reschedule either by phoning or emailing our centre the Centre 24 hours notice is required. If you are a Monthly Member you can reschedule that session at any time – as long as the session takes place in the same month. We will do our best to make up the missed session. However, if there is no availability in other sessions then we wouldn’t be able to make up that session.
How much does it cost?

How long does my child need to stay?
This obviously varies enormously from child to child, depending on your goals and the starting point. We will always give an honest opinion to help you decide whether to continue with tuition. Learning is an on going process and we find that our children come to our centre for a variety of reasons and tend to stay for a while as this boosts their confidence and learning development.
Is there a contract?

Learning is an on going process and we find that our children come to our centre for a variety of reasons and tend to stay for a while as this boosts their confidence and learning development. Our Monthly Membership Plans are great value for money, and in order to offer this low-priced option we ask you to commit to monthly membership payments for an initial six months. After that you can cancel by giving one month’s written notice.
How will i know if its working?
Improvement in your child will be seen almost straight away, depending, of course, on the starting point, the age and level of your child. Going up a set or two at school, and being able to cope with homework often happens quite quickly after starting with us. Younger children show the fastest improvement, but the key to ensuring that our tuition is most effective for your child whatever their age is regular attendance. Commitment to a session atleast once a week shows your child you are serious about helping them, and gives them a boost right away. Once your child begins to find learning fun – and they will, once they start to succeed – then they will be happier and more focussed in general.
What should i know about coming to the Assessment?
You need bring no special equipment to the Assessment. It is best if at least one parent can attend with the child, for the purposes of discussing the results at the end. If this is impossible, we can feed back to you by phone after the Assessment is finished.
